Cleared for Departure

Series 19 – Landscapes and Streetscapes

Closer to civilization the wi-fi signal has returned with enough gusto to traffic videos. I’ve included two below.

One is of Dettifoss from far and up close. It’s about 30 seconds. We are on the eastern edge of the gorge looking west.

The second is from a plane. I wanted to show the landscape from above. You can see how water has carved the landscape. The Icelanders have a close relationship with water, as we’ll find out here at the Blue Lagoon. This video is longer, and shows us departing Akureyri and landing in Reykjavik. I skipped the boring parts where you can only see clouds.

Icelandic Humor

Icelanders are not overtly gregarious. They play it cool to strangers at first, which is common in many cultures in Europe. Underneath the ancestral Viking stoicism seems to be a slow burn, quirky sense of humor that must develop because it’s dark some huge percentage of the year. Below are some … signs … that out them as more silly than expected upon a first encounter.

Terrifying cat.
The full text reads: Gryla is a centuries-old troll-ogre who chases and eats badly behaved children during the Christmas season. Her kind of pet, JÓLAKÖTTURINN, the Christmas Cat is a big, terrifying feline that devours not only children, but anyone who hasn’t received new clothes for being bad or lazy. In 1987, Björk’s song scared an entire generation, and even today, Icelandic families give wool socks as Christmas gifts, just in case.

I hope you all get (at least) socks for Christmas.
