Cleared for Departure

Go Real Fast

I could regal you of the history of Ferrari and discuss design, flow, and craftsmanship that goes into creating the cars.  I might even weave together a tale about how great design and great engineering can combine to create the sublime in an end user.  I’d cap it off with a zinger last line, that managed to weave together all my various points.  But, really, you probably just want to know one thing:  Is driving a Ferrari better than sex?  (Because, sex is pretty great.)  So how does driving a Ferrari compare?  RBD wouldn’t answer.

I can’t begrudge her.  I rode along while she tore ass down a lane and a half Italian side street.  I needed a cigarette afterwards.  It was the most intense experience I’ve ever had  in a motor vehicle, and I wasn’t even the one driving.

And the design of Ferrari does create a sublime experience, one where the artifice of the car falls away and it becomes an extension of you that fulfills some innate want to harness raw power.  I get why people own them.  Personally I found the info about the engines most interesting.  Those hunks of beautifully crafting metal are just as magical as the external lines and red paint.

Should you find yourself in Italy, and even if you’re not a car person, I recommend making the trip to Modena to visit both museums.  A shuttle bus connects them for a small fee. The company that rents Ferraris, called Push Start, is not affiliated with the museum.  They’re just conveniently located across the street.

The experience feels just as exquisitely designed as the cars.
